Duncan McDonnell is an Irish political scientist at the European University Institute where he conducts research on political parties, populism and Euroscepticism.

Until September 2011, he conducted research and lectured Political Science at the University of Turin. From April-June 2011, he was Swiss National Science Foundation Fellow at the Institute of Political and International Studies, University of Lausanne. He is also honorary research fellow in Italian Studies at the University of Birmingham.

He is the co-editor, with Daniele Albertazzi (Birmingham) of Twenty-First Century Populism (Palgrave, 2008) http://us.macmillan.com/twentyfirstcenturypopulism

He and Albertazzi are currently working on a book entitled ‘Populists in Power’ (Routledge, 2013), based on 3 years of research in Italy and Switzerland.

He is also working with Anna Bosco (Trieste) on the 2012 ‘Politica in Italia/Italian Politics’ yearbook, published in Italian and English by Il Mulino and Berghahn.

He and Oscar Mazzoleni (Lausanne) are currently working on a research project (funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation) on local democracy in Italy and Switzerland and the relationships between parties and directly-elected mayors.
