About

Costanza Hermanin is currently a Fulbright visiting fellow at the School of Law of Columbia University, New York, where she is working on a project titled "The public and private enforcement of racial antidiscrimination law: a cross-Atlantic perspective". Later in 2011, she will work on this project at the Law School of the University of California at Berkeley.

As a researcher in the department of social and political science of the European University Institute,  Costanza is completing her Ph.D. thesis comparing the domestic implementation of the European Union Racial Equality Directive in France, Germany and Italy.
Her other research interests comprise immigration and citizenship policy, Roma in Western Europe and EU involvement on these themes.

Aside the academic activity, Costanza works to coordinate strategic litigation on immigration and antidiscrimination issues in Italy and develop lobbying efforts at domestic and EU level with international NGOs.

In the past four years, she has been conducting her research thanks to visiting periods at the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung (WZB) and at the Centre d'Etudes et Recherches Internationales (CERI - Paris).

She is the co-editor of a forthcoming (October 2011) special issue of Ethnic and Racial Studies titled ‘Should race “count” in fighting discrimination in Europe”?’ for which she also wrote a paper on the emergency census measures targeted at Roma in Italy.

Her other publications deal with antidiscrimination institutions in Europe (Diritto e Lavoro 2010), Roma rights litigation (with Jim Goldston, in Bonetti P., Simoni A., Vitale T. (eds) (forthcoming), La condizione giuridica di rom e sinti in Italia, Milano: Giuffré) and the use of migrant-stereotyping language by Italian press (with Chris Hanretty, Bulletin of Italian Politics, 2010).
